In Southern Africa Kiaat is one of the most valuable timber species and in South Africa it is a protected tree. It is also known as “mukwa” or in Afrikaans “bloedhout”. The colour of the wood can vary widely from a lighter golden brown, to a darker reddish or purplish brown, often with streaks of dark red, dark brown and light brown. The red colour of the wood is a result of the remarkable, dark red sap of the plant; the alternative name of Bloedhout (Bloodwood) rises from this. Colours tend to become more subdued with age.
